Ophelia Rationale BP 12

I've chosen Ophelia as my interest for this portion of the class. Ophelia is a "static" character and this is oddly intriguing for me. I feel as if in such a massively male-dominated world as she lived in, her conflict within loving Hamlet and being told to do otherwise by her father and her brother is remarkable. I personally believe that gender roles are important to notice in any work as they reflect directly on the societal norms and priorities. Her relentless loyalty is admirable and her deterioration is humbling. The topic of heart ache has been reached by nearly every artist with access to other humans, the reason I still find it interesting is because of the way people handle it. Some (like Ophelia) respond violently and lose themselves in it. Her eventual madness surely is an example of a negative reaction. This is both personal and universal, the relation of a character to oneself is a definite hook and, though somewhat stereotypically, I feel drawn to the female of the play. Her manipulation at the hands of men around her is separate from what I typically encounter, though is most worthy of delving into. I am hoping to not only understand the priorities of the time-period but also how Shakespeare wanted to portray this. I'm looking forward to Ophelia finding a voice on social-media. Even if she seems fickle, her depth is altogether unclear at this point
